Networking - the Seven Rule.
When I first moved to LA and figured out that networking was probably the key to working in the entertainment industry, one of the components of my personal business plan was the "7 Rule".
Basically, I committed myself to a minimum of 7 networking/business development "events" every month.
What counts as an event?
Anything that does not make money, but that expands my network and/or knowledge of the industry.
Taking a producer to lunch ... attending a bar seminar on music law ... calling an actor I haven't talked to in a year to chat about football ... anything and everything, as long it is not a commercial endeavor. By quantifying the networking, I devised a more or less objective standard to track and evaluate my business development efforts as a producer and as a lawyer, it I ensured that I didn't lose focus in this area.
Truth be told, sometimes it's hard to get out of the house or office to a film screening, party, lunch or whatever. But doing so, in my opinion, is absolutely essential to working in the entertainment industry.
Just my .07 -
